After nearly a decade of "any day now" rumors, Apple's first foldable iPhone is finally moving from patents and speculation into actual mass production tooling. If you're on the fence about whether to sell your Galaxy Z Fold 7 and wait, or you're just Apple-curious, here's the complete picture of what we know so far — and, honestly, what we don't.

Launch timing

The most credible consensus in mid-2026: mass production begins in H2 2026, consumer launch is expected in autumn 2027. This aligns Apple's typical iPhone launch cadence (September/October), and it matches what Ming-Chi Kuo, DigiTimes, and Wayne Ma (The Information) have all reported independently from separate supply-chain sources.

What Apple has NOT done yet, as of this update:

  • No official press release, teaser, or WWDC mention
  • No confirmed product name ("iPhone Fold" is our best guess; "iPhone Ultra" has been floated too)
  • No confirmed launch date beyond "2027"

Expect the official announcement between June 2027 (WWDC keynote) and September 2027 (fall iPhone event).

Form factor

Every credible leak agrees Apple's first foldable is a book-style device — opens like a book from a candy-bar cover screen to a near-tablet-sized inner display. Same category as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It is not a clamshell (Z Flip-style) foldable, and it is not a tri-fold like the Galaxy Z TriFold.

What this means for case buyers: existing case categories translate directly. Hinge covers, slim MagSafe cases, cardholder cases, and heavy-duty rugged cases all make sense for the iPhone Fold form factor — which is why FoldifyCase is already tooling all five categories for launch.

Display specs

Current reporting points to:

  • Inner display: ~7.8 inches, ProMotion 120Hz, likely OLED with a crease-minimizing hinge design (Apple has filed multiple patents on this)
  • Cover display: closer to a standard iPhone Pro Max form factor for one-handed use — unlike the narrow "candy bar" cover screens on early Galaxy Z Folds
  • Under-display Face ID or Touch ID in the inner display remains contested; The Information reports Apple is targeting under-display Face ID but may fall back to a punch-hole in the launch model

Chipset & internals

Almost certainly ships with the A20 Pro or A21 chipset depending on 2027 launch timing, alongside Apple's C1 modem (introduced in the iPhone 16e/17 lineup). RAM expected at 12GB minimum given the multitasking demands of the larger inner display. Battery life is the big unknown — foldables have never matched candy-bar iPhone battery times, and Apple traditionally under-shoots battery to keep devices thin.

Pricing

Analysts are projecting a launch price in the USD $2,000 to $2,500 range, which puts it in Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 premium territory (currently around $1,900). Given Apple's typical pricing premium and the mechanical complexity of a foldable, $2,499 is the most-cited number in supply chain analysis.

At that price, the case matters more, not less. Apple foldable buyers are historically the most protective of their devices — people who pay $2,500+ for a phone almost universally case it.

MagSafe compatibility

The iPhone Fold will natively support MagSafe (Apple's own standard), so third-party MagSafe accessories — wallets, wireless chargers, car mounts, tripods — will work out of the box. FoldifyCase iPhone Fold cases will include genuine N52 neodymium magnet rings aligned to Apple's MagSafe pattern to preserve MagSafe attachment through the case.

We track leaked CAD renders and supply-chain teardowns as they emerge, so production tooling is ready the moment Apple confirms specs. Case categories in preparation:

  • Slim MagSafe case — aluminum or polycarbonate with a full N52 magnet ring
  • Hinge cover case — 360-degree wraparound spine protection like our Aegis and Sync lines
  • Heavy-duty MIL-STD-810H rugged case — the Sentinel and Vanguard treatment for the iPhone Fold buyer who's terrified of drops
  • Wallet/cardholder case — for the tap-and-go crowd
  • Screen protector — for the inner foldable display, matched to Apple's hinge geometry

What we're still watching

  • Official Apple announcement — expected between WWDC 2027 and September 2027
  • Physical dimensions — exact device thickness and hinge measurements dictate case tooling
  • Camera bump size — iPhone camera bumps have grown every generation; a larger bump means deeper lens cutouts on cases
  • Charging speed — will Apple move iPhone Fold to USB-C PD 3.0 or 3.2 charging? Impacts our recommended charger pairings
  • Water and dust resistance rating — no foldable has hit IP68 yet; if Apple ships IP54 or higher, that reshapes buyer expectations across the entire foldable market

Should you sell your current foldable and wait?

Honest answer: no, not yet. The iPhone Fold is still 12-18 months out, and the current Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are excellent devices. If you're a Samsung or Google buyer today, keep enjoying your phone — we'll have iPhone Fold cases ready if you decide to switch at launch. If you're an iPhone loyalist who's been holding out for a foldable, mark late 2027 on your calendar and get on the waitlist.
