Up front: We make cases for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold line — Z Fold 6, Z Fold 7, and from 22 July, the Z Fold 8 and Z Wide Fold. We have a horse in this race. We do not currently make cases for the Motorola Razr Fold, and after measuring it, we have no plans to. The reason why is the most useful thing in this article. Last updated: 14 June 2026.

Every other Z Fold 8 vs Razr Fold comparison stops at the spec table — 200MP vs 50MP, 5,000mAh vs 6,000mAh, 45W vs 80W. This one answers the question a foldable owner actually has at switching time: if I move from Samsung to Motorola (or back), does any of my existing gear come with me? The short answer is no, and the long answer is about why cross-brand foldable case ecosystems almost never converge — even when the screens are the same size.

The diff: Z Fold 8 → Razr Fold (from a case designer)

We've broken this into the changes that matter to the device, then the changes that matter to whether your existing accessories survive the switch. Every line is marked CHANGED, NEW, BETTER, WORSE, or UNCHANGED, with the case-design implication where it exists.

Spec Z Fold 8 Razr Fold Diff Case impact
Price (US / AU est.) $1,999 / A$3,099 $1,899 / not officially in AU CHANGED Razr Fold has no official Australian channel — grey-market only as of June 2026
Folded thickness 9.0 mm 9.89 mm CHANGED 0.89 mm gap = entirely different case mould tooling
Inner display 8.0" 4:3-ish 8.1" 8.7:2 CHANGED Aspect ratio drives the case body proportions, not just diagonal
Hinge generation 8th gen Samsung Armor FlexHinge 1st gen Motorola book-style hinge NEW 1st-gen hinges are still settling — case clearance tolerances need a wider margin
Camera island Triple lens, vertical, top-left Triple 50MP, horizontal bar, centred CHANGED Camera cutout geometry is the single most expensive part of case tooling. There is zero crossover.
Side button layout Power+Volume right, mid-spine Power+Volume right, lower CHANGED ~14 mm vertical offset means port plugs don't line up
USB-C port Bottom-centre folded Bottom-centre folded UNCHANGED Only spec that lines up — and it's the cheapest part of the case to retool
Wireless charging Qi2 with native MagSafe-compatible ring Qi 1.3, no native magnetic alignment WORSE (Razr) Magnetic ring cases work natively on Z Fold 8; require an aftermarket sticker ring on Razr Fold
S Pen / stylus Rumoured return, internal slot unconfirmed Moto Pen Ultra US$99, no internal slot NEW (both) Either way, stylus cases for each device need a completely different cavity
Software One UI 8.5, 7 yrs OS Android 16 near-stock, 3 yrs OS BETTER (Samsung) Software longevity matters for case ROI — a 7-year case on a 3-year phone is wasted spend
Cover screen 6.5" 6.6" CHANGED Cover-screen lip tolerances need separate mould

The two devices share one tooling-relevant dimension: the USB-C port location. Everything else — the camera island, the hinge spine, the button layout, the cover-screen lip, the folded thickness — is different. A foldable case is not a slab-phone case. The hinge spine alone takes ~40% of the engineering time on a Z Fold case. There is no universal foldable case, and there will not be one until book-style foldables converge on a hinge standard, which they will not.

Will your current FoldifyCase Z Fold 7 case fit the Z Fold 8?

Yes, for some of our cases, with caveats. We've published the full case-by-case verdict in our Z Fold 7 → Z Fold 8 Case Designer's Diff, but the short version: cases with snug camera-island cutouts (Halo M1, Sentinel H1) will need re-tooling for the Z Fold 8's revised lens spacing; magnetic ring cases (Axon M2) carry over more cleanly because the MagSafe-style alignment doesn't depend on the camera bump.

Will any FoldifyCase case fit the Motorola Razr Fold?

No. None of them. We measured a retail Razr Fold unit on 8 June and the camera island geometry, hinge spine width, and folded thickness are all outside the tolerance window of every case in our current lineup. This is not a marketing answer — it's the same answer we'd give a customer who emailed asking. If you switch from a Z Fold to a Razr Fold, you are starting your case collection from scratch.

This is true in reverse too. Razr Fold case options today are limited — there are perhaps half a dozen first-party and third-party cases as of June 2026, all from generalist accessory brands that have not yet committed to the Motorola book-style line. The deepest Razr Fold case ecosystem at the moment is Motorola's own Style Shell and Style Snap, which are functional but not protective.

The DXOMARK #1 thing — what we'd actually say to a Z Fold owner

The Motorola Razr Fold currently holds the #1 DXOMARK score for foldable cameras. We'd be careful with how much weight that carries. DXOMARK is a paid-relationship lab, and "#1 foldable camera" in 2026 is a smaller leaderboard than "#1 camera phone" — there are six book-style foldables on the planet that DXO has tested at the time of writing. The Razr Fold's three uniform 50 MP sensors are genuinely well-tuned, especially the periscope. The Z Fold 8's 200 MP main will out-resolve it. Different strengths, not a tie.

For case design, none of this matters. The camera bump is the same height whether the photos win shootouts or not.

So: upgrade, hold, or switch brands?

Three honest answers:

If you own a Z Fold 7 and were planning to wait for Z Fold 8 anyway: wait. The 8th-gen hinge refinement, Qi2 native MagSafe, possible S Pen return, and the parallel Z Wide Fold launch all justify the wait — and FoldifyCase will have a full Z Fold 8 case lineup on day one because we've been designing against the leaked CAD since March 2026.

If you own a Z Fold 7 and are tempted by the Razr Fold: the 6,000 nit display and 80W charging are real upgrades. But you are walking into a 1st-generation hinge, a 3-year software support window, a near-empty case ecosystem, and (in Australia) a grey-import path. We'd hold for Z Fold 8.

If you don't own either and are choosing fresh: Z Fold 8 if you value software longevity, case selection, and proven hinge durability. Razr Fold if you value battery life, charging speed, and outdoor display brightness above everything else. Either way, do not buy a case before the phone is in your hand — the device-side reviews shift the verdict on cases too.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Motorola Razr Fold FAQ

Can a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold case fit a Motorola Razr Fold?

No. The folded thickness differs by 0.89 mm, the camera island geometry is entirely different (vertical triple on Samsung, horizontal triple on Motorola), and the hinge spine width does not match. No Z Fold case in any current lineup fits the Razr Fold. The reverse is also true.

Is the Motorola Razr Fold available in Australia?

Not officially as of June 2026. Motorola Australia has not confirmed a Razr Fold launch. Australian buyers are currently sourcing via US grey-market resellers at a roughly 15–25% premium plus shipping, with no local warranty support.

Is 6,000 nits on the Razr Fold actually 2.3× brighter than the Z Fold 8 in real use?

Peak brightness numbers are measured in high-brightness mode on a small portion of the screen, not full-screen sustained brightness. In direct sunlight, the Razr Fold's inner display will be visibly more usable than the Z Fold 8's. In indoor or HDR-content viewing, the gap is much smaller. The 6,000 nit figure is real engineering; it's not 2.3× brighter for every workflow.

Does the Razr Fold support MagSafe-style magnetic cases?

Not natively. The Razr Fold uses Qi 1.3 wireless charging without a magnetic alignment ring. A MagSafe-style case on the Razr Fold requires an aftermarket adhesive ring or a case with a built-in magnet ring — and the magnet placement has to clear the device's wireless charging coil, which sits in a different position than on the Z Fold 8.

Will FoldifyCase make cases for the Motorola Razr Fold?

Not currently planned. We are a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip specialist, and our 2026 roadmap is concentrated on Z Fold 8, Z Wide Fold, and the Pixel Pro Fold. If demand from our existing Australian and US customer base shifts toward Motorola in 2027, we'd reassess — but the first-generation hinge tolerances make a launch-window case risky to design well.

Which has better case ecosystem support, Z Fold 8 or Razr Fold?

Z Fold 8 by a wide margin. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line has more dedicated case options than every other book-style foldable combined — magnetic, hinge-cover, S Pen, MagSafe ring, leather, slim, rugged. The Razr Fold case ecosystem in June 2026 consists of perhaps six options across all brands, mostly from Motorola's own accessory line.

Is the S Pen confirmed for Galaxy Z Fold 8?

Not confirmed as of June 2026. Multiple supply-chain leaks suggest the Z Fold 8's slight thickness increase versus the Z Fold 7 may accommodate the digitizer layer needed for S Pen support, but Samsung has not announced it. The Galaxy Unpacked event on 22 July 2026 will confirm or rule it out.

Our verdict

The Razr Fold is the best 1st-generation book-style foldable anyone has ever shipped. It's also a 1st-generation product, with a 1st-generation case ecosystem, a 3-year software window, and no official Australian channel. The Z Fold 8 is the lower-risk upgrade for any current Z Fold owner, and the higher-ceiling buy for a fresh foldable buyer who wants a 5–7 year ownership horizon. From a case designer's chair, what matters most is the case ecosystem maturity: cross-brand foldable case parity does not exist and is not coming. Pick the device whose accessory ecosystem you actually want to live in.
